Cricket's three formats and major tournaments
To understand cricket betting, you first need to know the differences between the three main formats. T20 is the fastest format — each team faces just 20 overs, so the result can change at any moment. ODI, or One Day International, gives each team 50 overs, where strategy plays a bigger role. Test cricket is a five-day contest where patience and pitch conditions play a major part in the outcome.
In terms of tournaments, BPL is the closest to Bangladeshi fans. Interest in the IPL and T20 World Cup also grows every year. The Bangladesh Tigers' international series draws its own kind of enthusiasm — kariya gives you the chance to bet on matches across all these tournaments.
Betting works differently in each format. In T20, odds can change in seconds so decisions need to be made fast. In Test cricket, there is much more time to analyse at the end of each day. For detailed betting strategies, visit the betting tips page for a deeper discussion.
Football and other sports — how they differ from cricket
At kariya, you can bet on football as well as cricket. In football, a draw is a normal result, so the match winner market has three options — home team wins, away team wins, or draw. In limited-overs cricket formats, there are no draws, so you choose between just two outcomes.
Football sees changes across 90 minutes, but cricket's innings-based structure makes its betting markets more varied — for example, runs in a specific over or the market for a particular wicket to fall. Sports like tennis or badminton have set-based markets, which are structurally closer to cricket's innings format.
Overall, cricket is the sport Bangladeshi bettors know and follow most closely, because updates on every match — from local tournaments to the world stage — are easy to follow from home.
Popular betting markets — how each one works
Cricket betting offers many types of markets. Below are seven common markets with brief examples of each.
Match Winner
A bet on which team will win the match. In T20, odds are available for both Team A and Team B. Example: if Team A wins, that bet is settled as a winner.
Simplest marketToss Winner
A bet on which team will win the toss before the match starts. The result has nothing to do with how the match is played — it is just the toss. Odds are therefore usually close to even.
Quick decisionTop Batsman
A bet on which batsman will score the most runs for their team. Example: you pick one of three batsmen from Team A.
Player-basedTotal Runs Over / Under
A bet on whether the total runs scored in the match will be above (over) or below (under) a set number. For example: will total runs exceed 300?
Two optionsTop Wicket-Taker
A bet on which bowler will take the most wickets in the match. In T20, a bowler can bowl only 4 overs, so the options are limited.
Bowler-basedMulti Bet
A combined bet that links results from multiple matches or markets. Example: pick three teams across three matches — all three must win for the bet to succeed.
Higher combined oddsHandicap Betting
When the gap in strength between two teams is clear, a virtual advantage is given to the weaker team to level the market. For example, if Team B is given a 15-run head start, the final result is assessed including that advantage. This market reflects which team actually performed better.
Odds in three formats — explained with simple examples
Many people get confused by odds because different platforms use three different formats. In essence, they all express the same information in different ways.
| Format | If Team A wins (stake ৳200) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal 2.25 |
৳450 returned (৳250 profit + ৳200 stake) |
Multiply the stake by the odds |
| Fractional 5/4 |
৳450 returned (৳5 profit for every ৳4 staked) |
Numerator = profit, denominator = stake |
| American +125 |
৳450 returned (৳125 profit on a ৳100 bet) |
"+" means underdog |
All three formats above represent the same bet — if Team A wins, a ৳200 stake returns ৳450 in total, of which ৳250 is profit. If Team A loses, the full ৳200 is lost.
For a favourite, American odds are shown with a minus (-) sign. For example, if Team B's odds to win are decimal 1.50 = fractional 1/2 = American -200, a ৳200 bet returns ৳300 (including ৳100 profit). "-200" means you need to bet ৳200 to make ৳100 in profit.
Odds shift with wickets and overs — live betting
Live or in-play betting is one of the most engaging parts of cricket betting. Odds change after every wicket, every over and every boundary during the match.
Say Team A has scored 90 runs in 10 overs of a T20 match with 8 wickets still in hand. At that point Team A looks more likely to win, so their odds will shorten and Team B's odds will lengthen. But if two wickets fall in the very next over, the odds will flip again in moments.
In ODI, the run rate and wickets after the powerplay, and in Test cricket, the pitch condition at the end of each day — all of this feeds into live markets. In-play betting therefore requires quick decisions alongside an awareness of how the game is flowing.
Remember, betting is always for entertainment. Seeing odds change rapidly during live play is not a reason to rush into bigger bets. Read the responsible gaming guidelines and set your own limits.
Some practical tips before you start betting
Cricket betting is a form of entertainment — there is no strategy that guarantees a profit. Keeping the following points in mind will make the experience easier and more enjoyable.
- Set a budget beforehand: Decide how much you are willing to spend in each session before you start, and stick to that limit. Betting should always come from your entertainment budget.
- Choose markets that suit the format: In T20, quick-result markets like total runs or match winner are most popular. For Test cricket, consider session-based markets.
- Be careful with multi bets: Combined odds in a multi bet can be large, but every selection must win. If even one loses, the entire bet is lost.
- Check pitch and weather conditions: Pitch type and weather can have a big impact on the result in cricket — keeping this in mind is useful for live betting.
- Understand the odds before you bet: Whether odds are shown in decimal, fractional or American format, work out your potential return before placing a bet.
- Keep entertainment as the main goal: Every match is a chance to enjoy the game — treat wins and losses as part of the experience, not as guaranteed income.
